What is the OSI model?

The Open Systems Interconnection Model (short: OSI model) was developed by the International Organization for Standardization (ISO) as Reference model for open communication designed across different technical systems. This point becomes understandable if you think back to the beginnings of the Internet: At the end of the 1970s, the leading manufacturers in the field of network technology were faced with the problem that proprietary network architectures could only connect manufacturer's own devices. Hardly any manufacturer thought of building hardware or software components according to the specifications of other manufacturers. A project like the Internet, however, requires certain standards so that common communication is possible.

The OSI model is the result of such a standardization attempt and offers a conceptual framework Design basis for manufacturer-independent communication standards. For this purpose, the ISO-OSI model divides the complex process of network communication into seven levels, the so-called layers. layer). One therefore also speaks of the OSI layer model. Within the communication between two systems, specific tasks have to be carried out on each individual layer. These include, for example, communication control, addressing the target system or the translation of data packets into physical signals. However, this only works if all the systems involved in communication adhere to certain rules of the game. These are specified in so-called protocols that are applied to individual shifts or are used across shifts.

The ISO reference model itself, however, is no concrete network standard. Instead, it describes in an abstract form which processes must be regulated so that communication over a network works.
