By Jordan Baranowski / .21. May 2019 1:20 p.m. EDT

It may be easy for the uninitiated to assume that the John Wick Movies are just big, stupid action films. It doesn't take long, however, to realize that a lot of thought and effort is pouring into the world building of our favorite dog-loving killer, and one of our first signs of this comes in the first movie when John walks into the Continental Hotel in New York City.

We never get the full story, just a few hints of the bigger picture. As soon as John steps into the Continental, it quickly becomes clear that the underworld of hired killers he works in has a lot to offer. From its enigmatic owner, Winston, to the large number of interesting people roaming its secret rooms, the Continental continually offers little crumbs of the bigger world operating just below its surface. Actually,Birth films death called the Continental one of John WickThe best aspects of building the world.

With the release of John Wick 3We take a look at some of the more interesting secrets of the Continental. There will be Spoilers for the first twoJohn WickMovies, but we'll avoid divulging the secrets ofJohn Wick Chapter 3: Parabellum.

The Continental has only one set rule

Guests at the Continental seem to have a free hand to do what they want - the hired killers have a variety of services available as they prepare for their chores or relax between them. That said, there is one activity that is specifically prohibited inside the hotel's walls - although we've seen at least one character in every movie who breaks this rule.

This rule? No 'business' in the hotel. And when they say 'business' they are not talking about accounting.

Yes, the Continental is a safe haven for all assassins. We see that this rule is violated by both Mrs. Perkins in the first John Wick Film and by John himself at the end of the second. The penalty for violating this sacred rule? Well, this is not a world full of assassins who don't fit their job description. In fact, John's violation of this rule is the cornerstone of the plot of John Wick 3: Parabellum.

Speaking of the criminal underworld of John Wick...

The hotel's concierge is a reference to Greek myth

As the Continental Hotel our first introduction to the larger criminal underworld of the John Wick Universe, it would be easy for us to get lost entering. Fortunately, the hotel's concierge helps introduce the audience to this mysterious universe. His name is Charon and it is a very apt name for someone in his profession.

In Greek mythology, Charon is the ferryman to the underworld. When people died, they came to the Styx River, which encircled the whole land of the dead. The river could not be crossed without the ferryman and he asked you to pay a toll. A body is traditionally buried with a coin in its mouth - otherwise the mind cannot rest in the afterlife.

Similar, John Wick's Charon seems to be able to do almost any service, including dog sitting, if you pay them the right fee. If an uninitiated person enters the hotel without paying for Charon, they will likely be left on the wrong side of the river and be unable to enter the underworld that most of them enter John WickThe characters move through easily.

The hotel works with its own currency system

Speaking of gold coins, which are constantly changing hands at the Continental Hotel, the criminal underworld of seems to be John Wick works under its own currency system. Assassination contracts are paid out in real money, but the gold coins the assassins toss around are useful for a variety of different criminal purposes.

The coins don't seem to have any particular denomination, but they are used by John and the other assassins for the variety of goods and services on offer on the Continental. They also serve as an unofficial entry pass - with so many criminal companies disguised as legitimate companies, the coins tell the operator whether the user is here for legitimate or nefarious service.

The coins have a Latin phrase on each side. On one side is 'Ex Unitae Vires', Latin for 'From unity, strength'. The other side is 'Ens Causa Sui', which means 'It is generated from itself'. All Latin phrases seem to suggest that this criminal underworld has existed for thousands of years.

The administrative office has an essentially hack-proof security system

A fascinating detail of the Continental Hotel is its administration department - an elaborate office full of tattooed women. These women run archaic computers and an old telephone switchboard, and their job is to bring the internet to the attention of the hired killers John Wick Universe when a new destination has become available.

It may seem like a security risk to have all information related to the world's assassins routed through a unique office, but there is a method for the madness of the Continental. These bizarre computers are actually Commodore 64s that were discontinued in 1994. You'd think you had something extremely high tech, but if you think about it, the idea has its merits. These outdated computers would be incredibly difficult to exploit because of their old operating systems and hardware. Even the most accomplished data professional wouldn't have expected to hack a computer system that hasn't been used for decades.

Fans could briefly visit The Continental

Have theJohn Wick Movies that ever got you to try your hand at assassination? Well, the makers of the film actually gave New Yorkers the opportunity to do just that. They offered fans a 'one of a kind immersive event' where guests could experience the Continental Hotel as John Wick himself would. This pop-up experience in Brooklyn allowed fans to take on the role of the assassin for a day, registering at the switchboard before equipping themselves for a suit and interacting with actors playing their contract killers.

One thing, of course, for guestscould not do was actually checking in and spending the night as this Instagram-enabled event was just an advert to advertise John Wick Chapter 3. That's not derogatory - this looks like something everyone is a fan of John Wick would go crazy. Unfortunately, it only ran for one day in May 2019. Maybe for the 2021 release of John Wick 4 The film's producers and stars will open a residence like a Las Vegas show. Hey we can always dream.

The interior and exterior of The Continental were filmed in different buildings in NYC

There are still a few ways to experience the world of the Continental Hotel. There might not be any action-packed events and a roster of celebrities roaming around, but you are can Check out the hotels where the continental scenes were filmed next time you visit New York City. Yes, these are 'hotels'. You actually used two different buildings to enter the Continental.

The exterior of the Continental is filmed in the Beaver Building - located at 1 Wall Street Court at the intersection of Wall Street, Pearl Street and Beaver Street. The building was once the home of the New York Cocoa Exchange and is sometimes still related to such as.

However, if you want to experience the entire Continental Hotel, you have to click Delmonicos Restaurant on 56 Beaver Street. This historic steakhouse has been open since 1837 and describes itself as the country's first fine dining restaurant. You should make reservations if you want some pictures of yourself on John Wick's stomping grounds.

Hotel management

We started learning about the high table in John Wick: Chapter 2. The global assassin community is overseen by the cabal of powerful, rich, shadowy figures who serve as the inviolable ruling class. Although, apparently, they are involved in almost everything that happens in the criminal world of John WickIt seems like the managers of every single Continental Hotel branch have an influence on how their business works.

Winston, who runs New York's Continental, ends up tensing part of this muscleChapter 2when John breaks hotel rule by killing Santino D'Antonio inside. Despite the high table marking John for death, Winston sends a group of waiting assassins away and delays John's contract for an hour to give him time to get a head start.

Winston seems to know that he cannot undo the high table's decisions, but he has the power to delay and disrupt their orders if he so wishes.

There is a theory that Winston is John Wick's father-in-law

Speaking of Winston, a constant question that has not been answered is why the owner of the Continental Hotel is so kind to John. He definitely has a soft spot for Mr. Wick, familiarly referring to him as 'Jonathan' and keeping up with John's life outside of business. He also seems very concerned when John re-enters 'life' and even more concerned when he has to turn a contract upside down. Why?

A simple answer could only be due to John's professionalism and skill. He's also the always charming Keanu Reeves. But one theory suggests that Winston could actually be John's father-in-law. It's mostly just speculation, but it would help explain Winston's relationship with John a bit more.

Crisis on infinite earth ends

Is it possible Winston is the father of Helen, John's late wife? For sure. Is it likely? Probably not. But it would be a fun little crease in their relationship.

There is a TV show on the go

If you were worried about it Parabellum could be the last we see of the John Wick Universe, we have good news for you. Not only has a fourth film been announced, but the story is set to expand to the small screen as well. A television series calledThe Continental is in early pre-production as Starz wants to bring a series that will be in the John Wick Universe to their network in the near future. Details are rare, but we know a few things about what's planned so far.

Rotten tomatoes has a certain shit on the show - the creators have been shooting for at least three seasons and want to start filming this year. The Continental would debut before the fourth John Wick Film and would focus on characters who have never appeared in the films before. Carmi Zlotnick, President of Programming at Starz, is currently hoping actors like Ian McShane and Keanu Reeves will repeat their roles in support of an entirely new cast of characters for the spin-off.

It will be some time before we see The Continental Debut on TV, but it also seems it's definitely on its way. After all, we now need a new obsession game of Thrones is over.
