What is biophysics

Biophysics is a field of science at the interface between physics, chemistry and biology.
It combines elements of all three sciences and deals with the structure, properties, function and dynamics of living matter. Its aim is to elucidate the fundamental processes of the basis of life; she uses physical approaches and combines them with concepts and working methods from chemistry and biology.

Experimentally, she uses the fund of methods from all three scientific directions. It is a quantitative science: Its aim is the quantitatively reproducible description of natural processes and the creation of quantitative connections between different phenomena and classes of phenomena. In order to achieve these goals, it relies heavily on the methods of mathematics.

Biophysics is distinguished from physics by its direct relationship to living nature, and from other natural sciences and technical subjects by the essential physical component for describing and investigating the objects and phenomena it encompasses. State-of-the-art methods from experimental and theoretical natural sciences are used, in particular from the areas of molecular spectroscopy, laser physics, optics and imaging.

The subject of biophysics is the investigation of phenomena of elementary and complex life processes, the application of the results obtained in the economic-technical field and the subject-related assessment of the potential consequences of these applications in the social environment. The results of biophysical work often have important effects on other fields of knowledge and sciences, for example medicine, and are significantly influenced in other directions by their side.
