Driving away rats with home remedies: non-toxic methods

If you want to drive away rats but don't want to kill the little rodents right away, there are a few home remedies available. Here you can find out what you can use to get rid of rats reliably and which methods you should rather refrain from.

Driving away rats - not that easy at all

Fighting rats is not an easy endeavor because the animals are clever and extremely capable of learning. They have a social intelligence, so they learn from the mistakes of their fellows. Specifically, this means that many tricks against the rodents only work once, because the remaining animals will not fall for it again.

To protect the environment and nature, home remedies can also be used to drive away rats. Live traps can be used for isolated animals. Basically, however, the following applies: A major rat problem is difficult to get under control with home remedies. In such cases, the exterminator usually has to take action.

Chase away rats with odor

Old home remedies for rats are clove oil and vinegar essence. The animals do not like the smell of these substances, and it is similar with turpentine. Try to get the rats to move out by spreading soaked rags in front of and around the rat burrow. However, there is also a risk here that the pests will get used to the smell.

Rats can also be scared off with hot chilli. If chilli powder or flakes are distributed on the animals' usual walking routes, they absorb the substance through the fur while cleaning. However, there is also a risk of habituation with this home remedy.

On the other hand, rats do not seem to get used to the smell of used cat litter so easily. The litter should be distributed in cloth bags along the paths of the rodents. Iron vitriol is also ideal for driving away: The substance is contained in many lime paints, for example.

Chasing rats away with music - is that possible?

The effectiveness of measures such as ultrasound or continuous exposure to music is controversial. Ultrasonic devices cost between ten and 50 euros and produce a high-frequency sound that is supposed to chase away the pests. It should also be borne in mind that it cannot be ruled out that pets are also exposed to this high frequency range.

Caution: A common recommendation for driving away rats is to lay out a paste mixed with plaster of paris. However, you should refrain from using this home remedy. The plaster of paris causes severe digestive pain in the animals, which unnecessarily torments them and even kills them in the event of an overdose. In the event of the death of a member of the same species, the rats will recognize the cause and will not run away, but will ignore the bait laid out.

Preventive measures against the rodents

In addition to the control agents against acute rat infestation, strategies must also be used to prevent the animals from entering the area. For example, you should seal holes and cracks caused by construction defects in order to block possible entry opportunities. You can close light and air shafts with fine-meshed grids. Backflow flaps in the toilet prevent rats from entering via the sewer system.

It is also important to identify possible sources of food and eliminate them. For example, a pantry is often the perfect retreat for rats where they can find enough food. They often spread out in the basement as well, because they are undisturbed there. Therefore, store food tightly closed in places inaccessible to the animals.

In addition, do not throw old food in the toilet, especially if there is no backflow flap. The garbage can can also attract rats. Always keep them closed. A compost with too much organic waste or even leftover meat provides a great pantry for the animals - such waste has no place on the compost. In general, ensure that your compost is well mixed with lawn clippings, herbs, vegetable waste, scraps of shrubbery and leaves.
