Tea - a wholesome, delicious variety

No other drink has such an immense variety as tea. In addition to an excellent, varied taste, teas are also good for your health.

Today, tea is a series of luxury foods that are consumed as hot infusions. Teas consist of different parts of the plant. Depending on the plant, leaves, buds, flowers, stems, bark or even roots are used.

Classic tea is drinks that are made from real tea plants. In the 18th century, however, infusions made from herbs and fruits also became established and these were and are called tea in German. Other countries have their own names for it.

Let's take a closer look at the individual types of tea:


Classic tea has long been drunk as a luxury item in Asia. The first teas came to Europe in the 17th century. In the past only fresh tea leaves were used. These had the disadvantage that they spoiled very quickly. Therefore a controlled fermentation and drying was carried out. This is how tea lasts a long time.

Tea production traditionally takes place in five steps. First, the harvested tea leaves are withered so that they become soft. Then they are rolled, which means that the leaves are broken open and the essential oils are released. After sieving to different quality levels, they are oxidized (or not) and finally dried.

There are four forms of classic tea, depending on the starting material and procedure. These differ in their degree of oxidation:

  • Green tea: This tea is not oxidized.
  • White tea: There is no oxidation with this tea either. Only young shoots of top quality teas can be used for white tea.
  • Oolong: This tea is partially oxidized under controlled conditions.
  • Black tea: This tea is completely oxidized.

Tea always contains caffeine, sometimes even up to 5%. That's a lot more caffeine than there is in coffee beans. But because tea is infused with more water than coffee, the caffeine content in the ready-to-drink drink is lower.

Aside from caffeine, which some people do not tolerate well, tea has many beneficial health effects. So it contains z. B. many flavonoids and polyphenols. These are potent antioxidants. Regular tea consumption, for example, has a positive effect on blood vessels and may even reduce the risk of cancer. Green tea, in particular, is a fashionable drink these days and its health benefits are touted. Actually, green tea is just as healthy as black tea. The amount of flavonoids the body absorbs from both types is practically the same.

Herbal teas have been used as a remedy for many mild complaints for over a thousand years. The history of herbal tea as a luxury food is very short at around two hundred years.

Even so, these teas offer many benefits. First of all, they do not contain caffeine, which makes them interesting for people who do not tolerate this stimulant substance well. For that they have a whole range of other ingredients. The most important are the essential oils that give these teas their flavor. Herbs are full of them and these oils have a variety of health benefits. There are also a number of vitamins, trace elements, minerals and polyphenols. An all-round healthy mixture.

Herbal teas are grown today mainly in Eastern and Southern Europe, Germany, China, Egypt and South America. In some cases, however, individual ingredients such as linden or elderflower still come from wild collections.

So that you can enjoy the full taste of your herbal tea for a long time, you should store it in an airtight container in a dry, cool and dark place. Otherwise the valuable ingredients will be lost over time.

Fruit tea

Fruit teas are very diverse in taste, which is why there is something for everyone. It always depends on the fruit palette that has been mixed together to make a tea. Because there are practically infinite mixing possibilities, fruit teas have a taste spectrum that ranges from fruity and flowery to sweet and spicy to fine-tart.

Interestingly, to this day it is not possible to grow all the fruits used in teas. For example, rose hips still have to be collected by hand.

Especially in the period after the Second World War, fruit teas became popular again. There were supply bottlenecks for tea and coffee and so local fruits were used for infusion drinks without further ado.

Fruit teas are caffeine-free and have various healthy ingredients. These include essential oils, vitamins, minerals, etc. They are stored like herbal teas, i.e. cool, dry, dark and airtight.
