Many employees of Radio SRF's regional journal Basel now also work from home. And there are some hurdles to overcome.

Dieter Kohler, you are the head of the Basel / Baselland regional journal. How is the regional journal organized in times of Corona?
Only three colleagues from our team are effectively in the radio studio in the Meret Oppenheim high-rise. Everyone else has been working from home since last week. However, it is planned that we will regularly exchange the delegation in the studio.

What's the idea with these changing teams?
This is a security measure. When fewer people work in the studio, fewer people come into contact with each other. Should someone from our team in the studio fall ill, the whole team would not be paralyzed.

How do you do the radio in the home office?
Everyone improvises. The biggest challenge is the sound quality. Logically, a living room does not have the same acoustic qualities as a radio studio. But we know how to help each other. A colleague makes the recordings in the garage in her car because that's where the acoustics are best. Another colleague knows how to help himself in another way: While recording the radio, he pulls a blanket over his head so that the room does not echo.

Does everything always work out?
Like many others, we also struggle with the problems of technical overload in the home office. We also sometimes have breakdowns because the network connection is interrupted.

It is noticeable that many members of the authorities have had their say in the regional journal over the past few days. Are you a government radio now?
I can understand that this impression can arise. In fact, we interviewed many government councilors and senior officials. We did this because the extraordinary decisions such as Carnival cancellations or school closings are one-off events that have to be explained. However, this does not rule out critical inquiries or critical research, as we have shown in our programs.

Public life practically stands still. Are you running out of topics?
Yet it is not so far. There are still many unanswered questions that need to be answered and also people's need to talk about the extraordinary situation. In the coming days we will also increasingly report on people who use special campaigns to strengthen public spirit in society or who otherwise try to make the most of the crisis.
