Should Rep. Katie Hill resign

US MPs resigned over alleged affair

Because she is said to have had a relationship with one of her employees, the Democratic US Congressman Katie Hill has resigned. It was with a "heavy heart" that she made the decision to resign from the House of Representatives, Hill wrote in her declaration of resignation published on Twitter yesterday.

The Ethics Committee in the House of Representatives had previously announced that it would deal with allegations that Hill “may have had a sexual relationship” with one of her Congressional officials. The conservative blog RedState had made the allegations public - and also published nude photos of the politician.

Hill accused her husband, with whom she is currently in divorce proceedings, of trying to humiliate her. She announced to fight "this form of exploitation". Countless women and girls would be victims of such exploitation and prevented from assuming public office.

It is with a broken heart that today I announce my resignation from Congress. This is the hardest thing I have ever had to do, but I believe it is the best thing for my constituents, my community, and our country.

"The hardest thing I've ever had to do"

According to media reports, Hill, who is bisexual, had admitted to having an affair with an employee of her election campaign. That wouldn't be against the rules of the US Congress - but a relationship with a member of her office in Congress would. Hill rejected the charge of having had such a relationship.

"This is the hardest thing I've ever had to do, but I think it's right for my constituency, my community, and our country," said Hill.

The Democratic Speaker of Parliament, Nancy Pelosi, said Hill had "admitted to errors in her judgment" that made her future MPs "untenable." "We have to ensure a climate of integrity and dignity in Congress and at all workplaces," Pelosi continued.
