Use Slack

Who can use this feature?
  • All Members can start and send DMs. GBranches can send DMs, but you can only start them with people who are in the same channel or channels.
  • Free, Âdefault-, Âplus- andÂEnterprise Grid-Plan

Direct messages (DMs) are smaller conversations in Slack that take place outside of channels. They can take place between two people or with up to nine people. DMs are best for spontaneous or one-off conversations that don't need a dedicated channel.

Note: If your company uses Slack Connect, then find out how to send DMs to people outside of your company

  • Click onAll DMs in the top left of the sidebar. If you don't see this option, click ÂMoreto find them.
  • By default, your most recent conversations will be in the Direct messages listed in the left sidebar.

Tip: Try the keyboard shortcut (Mac) or (Windows / Linux) to quickly find or start a DM conversation.

  • Scroll in theÂDMs tab through all of your DMs and tap a conversation from the list to open it.
  • Tap the field Go to search for someone's name and quickly open that conversation

Starting and sending DMs is just like writing any other message in Slack. You canNews button Use to start a new conversation or enter messages from an existing DM in the message field.

Note: You can add more people to DMs with three or more people to start a new conversation. If you need to involve more than nine people, you can move a group DM to a closed channel instead.
